Background of the Study

Childhood obesity has emerged as a global public health issue, with significant implications for the physical and psychological well-being of children. In Kaduna State, like many other parts of Nigeria, the prevalence of childhood obesity has been on the rise in recent years, influenced by factors such as changing dietary habits, reduced physical activity, and socio-economic conditions. This phenomenon is concerning due to its association with a range of health risks, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health disorders.

The transition from traditional diets to more energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods, combined with a sedentary lifestyle, has contributed significantly to this trend. Schools, where children spend a considerable amount of time, are key environments for promoting healthy behaviors, yet many lack the infrastructure or resources to support such initiatives. As a result, childhood obesity rates continue to increase, posing long-term health risks for the affected children. This study aims to examine the trends in childhood obesity in Kaduna State and explore its associated health risks, with the goal of identifying strategies to mitigate the problem.

Statement of the Problem

The growing trend of childhood obesity in Kaduna State poses significant health risks for affected children, both in the short and long term. Despite the increasing recognition of the problem, there is a lack of comprehensive data on the specific health risks associated with childhood obesity in the state. This study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating the trends in childhood obesity and the associated health outcomes, as well as exploring the factors contributing to this growing public health challenge.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the trends in childhood obesity in Kaduna State.

2. To identify the associated health risks of childhood obesity in the state.

3. To recommend strategies for addressing childhood obesity in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. What are the trends in childhood obesity in Kaduna State over the past decade?

2. What are the health risks associated with childhood obesity in Kaduna State?

3. What factors contribute to the rising prevalence of childhood obesity in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Childhood obesity has increased significantly in Kaduna State in recent years.

2. Childhood obesity in Kaduna State is associated with increased risk factors for non-communicable diseases.

3. Poor dietary habits and physical inactivity are major contributors to childhood obesity in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on childhood obesity trends in Kaduna State, specifically targeting children aged 5 to 18 years. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining accurate data on children's health behaviors and the potential underreporting of obesity rates in rural areas.

Definition of Terms

• Childhood Obesity: Excessive body fat in children, typically measured by a body mass index (BMI) above the 95th percentile for age and sex.

• Non-communicable Diseases: Diseases that are not transmitted from one person to another, such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

• Sedentary Lifestyle: A lifestyle characterized by little or no physical activity, often associated with increased screen time and poor health outcomes.
